On November 30th, CCAHA Paper Conservator Heather Hendry presented "Gellan in Paper Conservation: A Hands-On Workshop for Conservators" at the Center for Jewish History (CJH) in New York. The workshop, first in a series organized by CJH for practicing conservators, discussed CCAHA's use of gellan, a rigid polysaccharide gel with a wide range of uses in conservation. At CCAHA, we use it for washing items with water sensitive media; stain reduction; removal of backings, tapes, and adhesive residues; solvent delivery; and application of chelating agents. Hendry led the participants through presentations, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
