Rebecca Smyrl, Book Conservator, earned her MSIS / Certificate of Advanced Study in Conservation from the Kilgarlin Center for the Preservation of the Cultural Record at the University of Texas at Austin. She also holds a diploma in bookbinding from the North Bennet Street School (Boston, MA) and earned a B.A. in English from Haverford College (Haverford, PA).
Ms. Smyrl previously worked at CCAHA as a book technician from 2005 to 2007. Prior to re-joining the CCAHA staff in 2011, Ms. Smyrl interned at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, where she treated books and flat paper items related to Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and worked as an advanced intern at the Newberry Library in Chicago, IL.
Ms. Smyrl is a member of the American Institute for Conservation Book and Paper Group and of the Guild of Book Workers. She recently reviewed the 2009-2011 Traveling Exhibition of the Guild of Book Workers for The Bonefolder, a peer-reviewed e-journal for bookbinding and the book arts. Access the issue here.
