The two handcolored tintypes came for treatment because the white mold on the surface was obscuring large portions of the photographs.

The treatment included reducing the mold, addressing areas of rust on the tintypes’ iron supports, removing paper fragments from the verso of one tintype, and inpainting. For the rust, large accretions were reduced and a protective coating applied in order to prevent further corrosion of the metal.

The client chose to have two facsimile copies of each object printed. One facsimile copy of each was housed in a sealed package and framed. The original photographs were placed into a custom storage box.
