This hand-colored silver gelatin portrait of an African American WWI soldier is difficult to appreciate due to extensive damage and staining. The photograph has large tears, numerous losses, abrasions, and punctures. Insects have eaten the surface and left thousands of dark fly specks.

The conservation treatment of this photograph has improved its stability and appearance. Surface dirt and substantial accretions were removed. The weak and brittle mountboard was replaced with a lining of Japanese paper and wheat starch paste adhesive. The distracting losses in the image were filled with a toned paper; some were inpainted with watercolors.

The housing for this photograph was a reproduction frame with convex glass, typical for photos of this type and time period.
